Pioneers fall to Warriors, championship run ends

The Reign has ended. There will be a new champion.

The St. Paul Pioneers, champions of the NEFL every season since joining the league in 2010, will not repeat as top dog in 2017.

The Minneapolis Warriors, in a defensive battle, had just enough offense to send the Pioneers home, 17-7 Saturday at East Ridge High School in Woodbury.

The Pioneers scored first, taking a 7-0 lead on a Cleve McCoy touchdown run in the first half. But the Warriors would knot the score, 7-7, just before halftime.
Minneapolis would score twice more in the second half to seal the win. St. Paul finishes the season 9-4 overall, 8-3 in the NEFL. It is the first time in eight seasons that the Pioneers have not finished as NEFL champions.

Minneapolis will play the Northland Bulls next week in the Elite Bowl.
